Between Earth and Air
|
Between Earth and Air (2019) is an solar-powered interactive sculpture. Six metal tubes are arranged in a tensegrity structure using cables, so that only three of them touch the ground. All tubes float in the cable web without touching each other. In the middle, a wired tube pendulum holds a gem that reflects sunlight. The bottom part of the pendulum holds a small bell. The more vertical tubes are large capacitive sensors. When touched, they active up to three servo motors, making the pendulum swing and the bell to toll.
This work was part of the outdoor exhibition "Simply Elemental" at the Hann Horticultural Garden at Virginia Tech. It was a collaboration with Hiromi Okumura and George Tatum. The opening also included a performance by Hiromi Okumura and Claire Constantikes. |
