I am an Assistant Professor at Northeastern University, jointly appointed at the College of Arts, Media, and Design and the Khoury College of Computer Sciences. I direct the Reality Design Lab

I received a PhD in Computer Science from Virginia Tech. My dissertation focused on mobile augmented reality interfaces. I also have an MS in Computer Science from UFMG, Brazil. In my thesis, I investigated an efficient way to render multiple points of view in a computer cluster.

From 2018 to 2022, I was an Assistant Professor at the School of Visual Arts at Virginia Tech. From 2010 to 2014, I was an Assistant Professor at the
School of Fine Arts of UFMG, Brazil, where I helped to develop the curriculum of the bachelor's degree in Animated Cinema and Digital Arts.

I  was a co-founder of the game development studio Ilusis. My responsibilities included strategic planning, writing R&D funding proposals, managing projects, and contributing to game design.

In my lab, our goal is to understand how we experience augmented and virtual reality and enable new ways to communicate, think, and have fun. I have explored these ideas by asking questions such as:
  • How should AR behave to better integrate into our lives?
  • Why do some people get sick in virtual experiences?
  • How can we enable the sense of touch in VR?
  • How can AR and VR be used to improve teamwork?
Our lab research has been published in top-tier journals, such as IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics and the International Journal of Human-Computer Studies, as well as in the proceedings of major HCI conferences (ACM IUI, IEEE VR, IEEE ISMAR, ACM VRST). My work has been supported by NSF, ONR, Snap, Google, and NIH. My artistic research has been displayed in multiple countries.
